Rep. Lightner: Millions in additional funding now on way to local schools
RELEASE|July 14, 2021

State Rep. Sarah Lightner said schools in the communities she serves in Eaton, Jackson and Lenawee counties are in line to receive significant increases in per-pupil funding for the 2021-22 school year.

Lightner, of Springport, said the governor today signed the K-12 school budget approved by the Legislature, which invests more in every student while fully eliminating the funding gap between districts that previously shortchanged local schools.

“This past year has been so incredibly difficult on our kids,” Lightner said. “We’re making sure our local schools have the resources they need to help students who have fallen behind and get kids back in the classroom.”

The measure signed today provides an additional $589 per student (up 7 percent) for districts currently at the minimum foundation allowance – including every single district Lightner serves. Districts in other areas of the state that were already at the maximum foundation allowance will receive an additional $171 per student (up 2 percent).

Based on student enrollment, local districts are estimated to receive the following increases:

  • Charlotte Public Schools, $1,457,545
  • Eaton Rapids Public Schools, $1,209,647
  • Olivet Community Schools, $727,733
  • Western School District, $1,668,443

Additionally, Lightner recently voted to allocate roughly $4.4 billion in federal COVID relief funding to Michigan schools – including nearly $75 million for schools in the communities she serves. These resources can be used to help with things such as catching up on lost learning, boosting mental health programs, improving building ventilation systems and other federally approved purposes.
