State Rep. Tim Kelly today highlighted literacy investments included in the new state budget, saying the plan builds on Michigan’s efforts to improve reading outcomes and better prepare students for long-term success.
“Reading is the foundation for everything else students learn in school,” Kelly said. “When we give teachers proven instructional tools and provide students with the support they need early, we set them up for success in the classroom and beyond.”
The budget includes funding for evidence-based literacy instruction, teacher training in methods to help students with dyslexia, and $50 million for tutoring and other reading interventions for struggling readers. It also increases the base amount schools receive for each student.
“We know what works when it comes to helping children become confident readers,” Kelly said. “This budget continues to invest in evidence-based literacy instruction, targeted interventions and teacher training so schools can focus on helping every student reach grade-level proficiency.”
In addition to literacy investments, the budget expands dual enrollment opportunities, continues teacher fellowship programs and maintains support for school safety and mental health services. Kelly said the budget balances those investments with responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
“Our responsibility is to make sure every education dollar is helping students learn and succeed,” Kelly said. “This budget keeps that focus by supporting classrooms, strengthening literacy and making strategic investments that will benefit students for years to come.”
