Informational event will raise awareness, help kids and families

State Rep. Phil Green has announced an upcoming meeting in Lapeer for parents and guardians who wish to learn more about youth mental health on Monday, Nov. 6.

The Mental Health Meetup event will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Lapeer High School Auditorium, located at 933 S. Saginaw Street in Lapeer. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Topics will include helpful things to watch for regarding a child’s mental health, such as signs of depression and anxiety, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and more.

“This is a robust discussion for parents and guardians on mental health and our youth from elementary to college, what impacts that mental health, and signs that someone may be experiencing a mental health situation,” Green said. “We must do everything we can to support our future generations. Mental well-being is a huge part of this equation. It impacts how children think, feel and act. It can dictate how they handle stress, interact with others, and make choices for themselves.

“This meeting will provide adults with the tools to know who to turn to if a child in their care begins showing signs of distress or if they need assistance. That ultimately helps keep kids safe and can save lives. I welcome anyone who is interested to attend.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, ADHD, anxiety or behavioral problems and depression are the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders in children. Research has shown that about one in seven children and teens in the U.S. have at least one treatable mental health disorder.

Experts from Lapeer County Community Mental Health, Lapeer County ISD and McLaren Health Care will be presenting at the event.

People with questions about the event may contact Rep. Green by phone at (517) 373-0587 or email at [email protected].
