State Rep. Julie Alexander today hosted Jackson County Undersheriff Christopher Simpson at the state Capitol at a ceremony commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

“On 9/11, the heroism of first responders shone brightly against the dark backdrop of the atrocities of that tragic day,” said Alexander, of Hanover. “Every day, heroes like Chris Simpson keep us safe, even putting themselves in harm’s way to do their duty, and it is our solemn duty to reflect on the history of 9/11 and thank those who selflessly serve.”

The Michigan House of Representatives holds an annual 9/11 ceremony to memorialize the horrific attacks and pay tribute to the military and first responders, especially those who died in the line of duty over the last year. Each representative may invite one member of the military or first responder to attend the event.

“Undersheriff Simpson’s long, noble career in the military and law enforcement has made our nation and community more secure,” Alexander said. “We honor him and all our brave first responders — on 9/11 and throughout the year.”

Simpson was raised in Jackson and graduated from Jackson High School and Spring Arbor University. A 30-year veteran of the U.S. Army and the Michigan Army National Guard, Simpson was deployed to Iraq in 2003. He retired from the military in 2015 with the rank of command sergeant major, and he earned 25 medals and numerous citations throughout his distinguished military career. Simpson also served in the Jackson Police Department for 25 years retiring in 2017 with the rank of lieutenant. Chris is a graduate of Northwestern University Staff and Command, as well as the FBI National Academy.  He was appointed undersheriff for Jackson County in December 2020. Simpson and his wife, Erica, have four children: Ashley, Christopher II, Kendall and Serena.
